In the church we always rejoice at a child or an adult being presented for baptism. It is both a joy and a privilege but also a serious responsibility for both yourselves and the members of the church.

  • Baptism allows the church to publicly welcome the person being baptised into God’s family. We believe that it is through being baptised that people become part of the worldwide church. Baptism, we believe, is the sign of ‘dying’ to our old lives and ‘rising to new life in Christ’. We sprinkle water on the head of the person being baptised, symbolising the start of a new life.

  • Both adults and children can be baptised within the Church of Scotland.

  • During the Baptismal service, the parent/s profess their own faith and promise to give their child a Christian upbringing. In the case of adult baptism, the person being baptised, makes the promises.

  • No, you do not have to be a member of the church, however, once baptised, the expectation is that you would become an active member of the church family.

If you are interested in becoming a member of our church, please go to the ‘Church Membership’ page within the ‘Life Events’ folder on our website.

  • Usually the Baptism ceremony would take place during Sunday worship in front of the congregation. This emphasises that baptism is part of the life of the church and stresses its importance. However in very exceptional circumstances, the baptism can take place out with Sunday worship.

  • If you would like to find out more about baptism for yourself or your children, please contact the minister who will be happy to discuss it with you.

  • Please find attached baptism form - if you wish to arrange for a baptism to take place at Torry St. Fittick’s Church then please download, complete and return the attached form to the Church Office.
